1950 National 1155 Dreadnought J-50 Gibson Body Acoustic Guitar – Natural
$0.00
Description
On consignment (sorry, no trades considered) we have a 1950 National 1155 acoustic dreadnought guitar with a modern, tweed acoustic dreadnought guitar case in good condition, natural finish. This is a rare and most interesting guitar. National would make these “Stylist” necks, which are neck pocket adjustable and built with a metal core surrounded by wood, and the body was made by Gibson, a J-50 body. The National (Valco) serial number plate on the back of the headstock dates to 1949, the Gibson FON (3060) dates to 1950. This guitar is currently fitted with Medium (.56) gauge D’Addario strings, and has a 12th fret action of about 2.7mm (see photo). The nut measures 1.65″, and I would describe the profile as a comfie medium, slightly flat “C”. This guitar weights 4# 11oz. Spruce top, mahogany b/s and neck, rosewood fingerboard. This guitar has been well maintained, plays well, and sounds absolutely fantastic. This is a great way to get a fabulous vintage dreadnought tone without a huge price tag. Condition– as stated, solid good condition.
This guitar has been at some point clear finish sprayed, but was originally blonde to start. Not a burst like some. The spray job is ok, semi-pro, but does show a bit of orange peel to it on the upper side bout. There is some case fuzz stuck to the lower bout (see photo), perhaps cased up before the spray work had fully cured. Cosmetically this guitar presents well, light scratches and dings from age and use, but no abuse. It looks good and has a nice vintage vibe. Looking inside, I can see no evidence of major repairs or cracks.
There is a small hole drilled in the lower bout (see photo).
At some point in time, somebody removed the National badge from the headstock. We do not have it.
This guitar has recently been re-fretted, and the neck planed as well. Very healthy frets. Original tuning machines work fine. Vintage nut is bone (maybe ivory), not sure if is original but it is healthy. The back of the neck is nice and clean. The neck adjuster works, and has been recently pro set. This guitar also took some brace repair, all braces original and healthy. The original maple bridge plate has been laminated with some fresh maple, as is quite healthy.
The body is sound, the binding is healthy. The bridge, saddle and bridge pins are healthy. I am not sure if the pick guard is original, it certainly looks the part. Once again, solid good condition with good playability and fantastic tone that punches way above it’s weight class.
